An Answered Prayer *Week 17 and 18*

Image
Another two week blog post since everything has been really busy recently. The days are too short for everything I want to do. I want to watch my movies with the kids and hang out with the volunteem, and that all has to be fit around our different work schedules. It’s a tough situation which leaves me with not a lot of time to blog so, sorry for this instance and sorry in advance for any others. On Monday of week 17, I made my plan to go to town to buy the small girls house a new TV since my flash drive of movies didn’t work with their old one. The reason I wanted to buy them the TV is because my flash drives are a gift to each house, and if they can’t use my gift, what’s the point? So, I found a reasonable TV for 400 dollars and took it immediately! When I got back to the orphanage I called Christian to help me put up the TV. Christian came, but we didn’t have the proper materials to mount it to the wall yet, so we saved the project for Tuesday. ...

Exploding into a Million HIV Particles *Week 16*

Week 16 starts on Tuesday morning at the airport. I found my gate with ease and got myself some food. In the middle of my terminal was a big souvenir shop so I decided to try and find some new earrings for one of the leaders of the small girls house that lent me an earring so I could swap my SIM cards while in Mexico. I found her a nice pair of butterfly earrings and decided to keep looking around. I ended up stumbling upon a pretty tea cup and decided it was exactly what I was looking to give Mamí. When I got to Panama, I boarded my plane immediately but after sitting in the plane for 30 minutes, we all got kicked off. The problem was that Honduras has been shrouded in smoke for about three weeks now so the plane couldn’t land safely. Nothing a two hour delay couldn’t fix though. So we re-boarded the plane and were off. After baggage claim I walked up the stairs to see my friends that had come to serve at Emmanuel with me. John was the first one to see me and immediately ran over to...

Sketchy Taxis, Dead Birds, Empty Wallet, and Naturally.. Death... *Week 15*

For the start of week 15 Misael and I had some work left in town so we headed out to do that. We knew it would take all day and I told Mike that we would for sure be done by 3:45. Mike told us he'd pick us up at 3:45 on the dot, then left ‘Misa’ and I some money for lunch and we got to work. It took forever for the operator of the machine to show up, so we started working without him. When he got to work though, he must have looked at us and decided we didn’t need help because he only stopped by to check the blade then went off to do something else all day. Even though it was just Misa and I, we got about half way through the rest of the pile by lunch. For lunch we went to the same place we had gone to on Saturday but this time they were serving fried shrimp and spaghetti🤤. While eating, Misa and I watched a family of three Americans enter the restaurant, which was really random because we were in a really random part of town. Misa and I had a little fun with it when I asked him w...

A Wisconsible Conversation *Week 14*

This week began with me finding out that Maestro wouldn’t be here until Friday which meant I had another week “off”. However, I already felt rested enough to get back to work, so I asked Eva for the key to the wood shop and went off to finish the shelves that Maestro and I have been working on. While working on the shelves, Mamí brought over a table she wanted me to sand down and repaint. So I had enough to keep me busy for this week! Since I had finished watching movies with the small girls over the weekend it was time to watch movies with the small boys. So once again four movies in four nights. One of the movies we watched was the Incredibles and in the Incredibles, Mr. Incredible eats a shrimp from a bowl so I asked the boys around me if they had ever had shrimp before and they said they hadn’t. Maybe that’ll be something I cook up for the kids. After the small boys I started watching movies with the Medium boys. I hit the bullseye with the Le...

A Reset *Week 13*

Week 13 started off when I got back to my house from grocery shopping. Upon reaching my front door, I realized I forgot to buy cereal, which was the main reason I went into town in the first place. So I had to go back to town again. On Tuesday I had a chat with Maestro and Chino and asked if they knew a place in town where I could buy Mamí a new tea cup. They chatted for a while and even drew out a map of town for me. Chino told me that he’d be going into town on Wednesday so I told him maybe I should just go with him instead of going that Tuesday afternoon by myself. The schedule for town was pretty simple. First, Chino needed to go to a bank in town because he would be gone for the rest of the week on vacation. While he did that, I placed an order at Bigos, then went to buy cereal at the Dispensa right next door. Then I went back to Bigos and ate. After a while, Chino joined me and when we were done, we headed back into town to look for Maestro's house. I stopped by Maestros ho...
